An Analysis of Figurative Language Translation and Its Readability in Ahmad Tohari’s Senyum Karyamin.

Keywords: short story of Senyum Karyamin, figurative language, readability. This study aims to know whether the types of figurative language in English translation of Senyum Karyamin have replacement or not and to measure the readability of the translation. The research used qualitative descriptive method with total sampling technique. There are 90 data found in this research. To collect the data, the researcher collected sentences that contain of figurative language and distributed questionnaire to the raters to measure the readability of translation. To answer the research question, the researcher used Littlemore's theory of figurative language and Nababan, Nuraeni & Sumardiono’s to measure the readability of translation. The results showed in 90 data, there are 8 types of figurative language identified including simile (20 data), metaphore (18 data), hyperbole (16 data), irony (2 data), personification (22 data), paradox (5 data), rhetoric (4 data), and repetition (3 data). Based on the raters’ assessment, 78 data have high readability, 10 data have medium readability and 2 data have low readability. Thus, it can be concluded that the translation of the figurative language in Senyum Karyamin generally have high readability. It is discovered that 78 data are dominated by metaphore, personification, and simile. It can be concluded that kinds of figurative language can determine the degree of translation readability because the words, technical terms, phrases, clauses, sentences or text translations can be easily understood by the readers.
